Stimulating R&D for a better and faster recovery
Investing in R&D is investing in the future. The Academy set out near-term interventions to ensure R&D in businesses of all sizes in the UK stay on track to support a better and faster recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.
In a report informed by the Academy's ongoing work on investing in R&D and a rapid intelligence gathering exercise on the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on R&D intensive businesses, we found the business R&D is at immediate risk of being halted or reduced as companies manage the economic impact of the pandemic. However, many recognise that R&D is part of the solution for economic recovery, especially with the need to adapt to the 'new normal' and in some sectors dramatically changed consumer demand.
